Vintage Foodie Finds We Love

For some reason we are so very drawn to vintage kitchen items, so much so, that we are constantly on the lookout for them at local thrift stores and estate sales.   In today’s throwaway era, it seems that a typical kitchen appliance only has a life of a decade if we are lucky, and kitchen gadgets and cooking items not only lack aesthetic value, but durability as well.

Thankfully great vintage finds are available if you happen to be in the right spot at the right time, or are willing to pay the price.  Here are several of the retro kitchen items that we love!

1)  Vintage curved refrigerators and gas stoves.    Where did we go wrong here?   How did everything curvy and durable turn into a square shaped short lived mess?     We heart this fridge!  This one was from Crosley, and the model was Shelvador, from 1952.

And look, look, at this beautiful vintage Tappan gas stove.   OMG.

2) The vintage lazy susan, complete with trays.   Ikea makes a similar style but somehow it’s not the same.

3)  Russel Wright Pottery:   An American art icon and ceramic dinnerware designer from 1939 to 1959, we especially love his “American Modern” collection for Steubenville Pottery.    Our favorite color is a retro pea green called “chartreuse”.

4)  The old school kitchen egg timer.    With today’s digital appliances, iphone apps and kitchen tv screens, this is an absolute lost icon of the past.   But we adore the simple functionality shown here by Mirro.

5) Pyrex!  Vintage pyrex will most likely outlive us, and we love the way they transition from the fridge or freezer to oven with ease.  We have been lemming these so much!  Named “primary colors”, the bowls were sold in various versions from the 1940’s through the 1970’s.

Do you have any vintage kitchen loves?  We’d love to hear about them!    Shoot us a comment and let us know.

Tomorrow we will be back with a delicious chef recipe, stay tuned!

Random Musings: Our Favorite Food Art

Due to an exacerbation of ADD a 2 hour long distraction today we spent precious time browsing creative food art, and decided to share with you several of our favorites.   Enjoy and we’ll be back to the chef recipes shortly!

1) Butter Me Up

What foodie fashionista wouldn’t want to wear this to her next cocktail party?    It put’s Lady Gaga’s meat dress to shame, and surely smells better too.  The carbalicious  Bread Dress by designer Ami Goodheart from SOTU Productions shot by  NYC photographer Ted Sabarese.

2) United Steaks of America

Ok Michigan could use some work but we respect his knife skills, and love the fact that all of the states are red.  By artist and photographer Dominic Episcopo.

3) Hold Me Closer Tony Danza Tiny Dancer

It’s a childhood dream come true, a living Candyland!   By Parisian artists Pierre Javelle and Akiko Ida.

Eclair Repair

The Sushi Robbers

4)  Marry Me?

Yes!  Who needs a sunset when you can bask in bacon scenery?  From the “Meatscapes” series by the talented collage artist Nicolas Lampert.

5) Ever Since We Moved Here My Jeans Don’t Fit

Parmesan rocks, broccoli trees, parsley bushes and bread mountains.  From the insanely brilliant photographer and “Food Landscapes” author Carl Warner.

6) Banksy Is A Foodie, We Have Proof

It wouldn’t be an art post without mentioning the elusive and wonderful, perhaps with the real name of Robin Gunningham, supposedly never been photographed, filmmaker and British street graffiti artist Banksy. Whew that was a long sentence that would make an English professor cringe.

Vegan propaganda or simply creative sillyness?   Whatever it is we like it. The following were on display at Banksy’s Village Petstore exhibit in Greenwich Village, which like all good things, has sadly come to an end.

7 Delicious Gifts For Chefs and Foodies

Certain genres of people can be tough to buy for during the holiday season.  For example, the man who has everything is always a challenge.   The princess shopaholic types are a nightmare.   Foodies, chefs, and cooks are tricky as well.    Cookbooks?  Probably not, they have them all, and may have published a few themselves.    A gourmet food product?   Perhaps, but will it live up to their standards?   Kitchen gadgets are always a thought, but it’s likely that most of the standard classics are already living comfortably at home in their kitchens.

We’re here to help solve your holiday challenge!   Here are seven creative and unique Christmas gift ideas for the chefs, foodies, epicures, and gourmands in your life that may seem to already have everything:

The Flatware Clock with Spoon Pendulum, $80

From one of our favorite Etsy sellers, MetalMedia in Chicago, this unique clock features brushed stainless steel forks, spoons, and knives with a swinging pendulum serving spoon, and is packaged for delivery in a pizza box. ♥

The Whirley Pop Vintage Popcorn Maker, $29:

This retro style stovetop popper features a vented lid for crisp fluffy kernals, a stainless steel stirring mechanism to keep popcorn moving while preventing burning, and a wooden handle that stays cool.  We love it’s 25 year warranty on all moving parts, as well as its rave reviews on Chefs Catalog.

The Chefs Knife Pendant
, $50

We love this edgy sterling silver necklace, handmade by New York artist Debbie Howe. You can purchase it at Uncommon Goods.

Van Gogh’s Table at the Auberge Ravoux, Recipes From the Artist’s Last Home and Paintings of Cafe Life, $19.95 for the paperback, or $24.98 for the hardcover.

Absolutely coffee table worthy, Van Gogh’s Table features a gorgeous combination of stories, artwork, and French bistro café recipes from his last days in the Auberge Ravoux, his temporary home in a small artists village near Paris.

Perfex Salt and Pepper Mills, $90 each at Williams-Sonoma

Of course, they already have salt and pepper mills, but trust us these are better! The Bentley of mills, Perfex are made in France from strong cast aluminum, have adjustable grinders for coarseness, front loading chutes, and a lifetime warranty. We have them, are in love, and will never go back to any other.

The Mario Batali Lunch Tote, $39.99

Featuring an insulated area to keep hot food hot and a back sleeve that slides on to rolling luggage handles, this chic Chef Batali lunch bag is perfect for impromptu picnics or airplane travel, and a portion of the proceeds benefit the Lunchbox Fund and the Food Bank for NYC.  For a smaller more feminine option, we also love this tweed insulated lunch bag by KOKO.

Vintage Spoon & Fork Pendant Lights, $449.00 – $1999.00

Le sigh.  Chef Michael Chiarello of Napa Style has selected a gorgeous piece of kitchen or dining lighting that we desperately crave. Composed of antique silver flatware hung from forged iron frames, these pendant lights come in various sizes and price points, and project a “fabulous play of light and shine”.  You may purchase it for us here, thank you!

If you have a unique idea we haven’t mentioned here, we’d love to hear about it in the comments.   Happy Shopping!

Chefs on Twitter, the lowdown

Following chefs on Twitter is one of our spare time secret pleasures. It’s great to keep a finger on the pulse of what’s happening in their kitchens, view  real time photos of their culinary creations,  follow restaurant special events, score a twitter recipe, and read occasional late night drunken musings or bitchfests therapeutic venting sessions.

Caution should be used when following celebrity chefs, as unfortunately there is a pathetic ongoing trend toward the creation of fake or impostor chef twitter accounts.  For instance there is a fake Eric Ripert (the authentic account is @AvecEric),  multiple fake Jamie Olivers (the real Jamie is here) , and a fake Food Network Chef  Michael Smith (authentic Michael here).

Depending on the chef, some accounts appear to be not the actual chef, but their staff tweeting.   It’s quite easy to tell this after a bit of tweet watching.   Our favorites include chefs such as Rick Bayless that actually get twitter,  interacting frequently with their followers.

The Savory Tv Delicious Chefs list includes not only celebrity chefs, but many lesser known talented chefs as well.     Did we miss someone special?    Let us know in the comments.   Enjoy!

Quite Possibly The Most Creative Foodie Video Ever

Photoshop geek? Oops sorry enthusiast we mean?  Foodie or food lover?  If so you must see this.  Shared from our friend Liza, aka @skeeterNYC, she is one of our favorite foodie filmmakers and the host of Food Curated.  This is  a brilliant video made in “stopmotion” for the competition AdobeYouGC featuring butter cookies with the new “Adobe Photoshop Cook!”

Unfortunately, or fortunately, the program is not real, but could you imagine the online culinary world if it was?   The video is a creation from the very talented artist Maya Rota Klein.

Give The Gift Of Food With a Mario Batali Watch

A3 Networks produced “The Best of Mario Batali” recently, which is a video tribute to our favorite chef crush filmed at a benefit for the Food Bank For New York City.   The Food Bank works to end hunger and increase access to affordable, nutritious food for over 4 million low-income New Yorkers through a comprehensive group of programs that combat hunger and its causes.

Wish to help?   Celebrate Mario and purchase a wonderful foodie gift,  a limited edition Mario Batali watch from Ernst Benz, or simply donate on the site here.

Featured in the video are: Emeril Lagasse, Anthony Bourdain, and the delicious Mario himself.  We loved this quote from Bourdain: “Look at him in all of his magnificence, he is an incredible creature, I’m basking in his golden glow.”  Ha! Go Mario!

An Ode to Julia Child, Quotes Included!

Over the years, the wild and wonderful Julia Child has inspired so many home cooks to step out of their element and make cooking joyful.   All of us who have been touched by her have our own reasons for adoring her, but here are mine!

  • Her venture into the culinary world didn’t start until age 40, I love that.
  • She was rough, sloppy, and spirited in the kitchen at times, but she always made things work!
  • She was a freaking spy!   Before her culinary career Julia worked for the OSS, which later became the CIA.  According to NPR,  “she was assigned to solve a problem for U.S. naval forces during World War II: Sharks would bump into explosives that were placed underwater, setting them off and warning the German U-boats they were intended to sink. Julia Child and a few of her male compatriots got together and literally cooked up a shark repellent that was used to coat the explosives”.
  • She hosted the world’s first ever cooking show in 1962 for WGBH, Boston’s public television station.
  • She bashed nonsensical diets and health crazes, had a love for full fat butter, wine, and gin and tonics, and lived to be almost 92.   Watch the video as she declares her love for McDonald’s french fries, before they made them healthier!

And her words are my favorite, here are an endearing list of Julia Child quotes: (Be sure to also check our previous post for more fabulous food quotes!)

“The only time to eat diet food is while you’re waiting for the steak to cook”

“In spite of food fads, fitness programs, and health concerns, we must never lose sight of a beautifully conceived meal.”

On what her longevity is attributed to, “Red meat and gin.”

“Always remember: If you’re alone in the kitchen and you drop the lamb, you can always just pick it up. Who’s going to know?”

“I think every woman should have a blowtorch.”

“Dining with one’s friends and beloved family is certainly one of life’s primal and most innocent delights, one that is both soul-satisfying and eternal.”

“I don’t think about whether people will remember me or not. I’ve been an okay person. I’ve learned a lot. I’ve taught people a thing or two. That’s what’s important.  Sooner or later the public will forget you, the memory of you will fade. What’s important are the individuals you’ve influenced along the way.”

The great news for Julia Child fans is that there is a new film premiering August 7th, entitled “Julie and Julia“. The movie  is writer-director Nora Ephron’s adaptation of two best selling memoirs; Powell’s “Julie & Julia” and “Life in France” by Julia Child with Alex Prud’homme, and stars Meryl Streep as Julia Child and Amy Adams as Julie Powell.  Michael Ruhlman attended an early screening and loved the film, I cannot wait to see it!  For those on Twitter be sure to follow @JulieandJulia for fun vintage photos and more classic quotes!

Twitter Love!

Today I am taking a video break to share some Twitter love!  Heidi from Savory Tv is SavoryTv on Twitter.   Through Twitter, we’ve entertained ourselves endlessly, kept up on Lance Armstrong’s races, met both professional and home food lovers, authors, world travelers, chefs, food producers and more.  We’ve tweeted with Bravo’s Top Chef employees during the show.  We’ve been snail mailed gourmet orange juice samples from Italy.  We’ve been sent toddler food containers and fresh walnuts from the backyard of a deliciously talented cookbook author.   We’ve discovered an entire new world of wine and food bloggers and culinary epicures, almost to an overwhelming extent.  And recently, we’ve had the pleasure of meeting talented chef guest posters, which has been a wonderful experience.   Twitter  is truly the only way to keep up on media, news, and trends buy having your finger on the pulse of what’s happening now.

Have a question, ask you Twitter peeps!  Curious if a movie is worthwhile, looking for an Iphone app for ebooks, or wondering why your photo of pear compote is looking to dark on the edges?  Throw your question into the Twitterverse and you will almost always get helpful responses.

There are several restaurants using Twitter effectively, and while some are not exactly brewing with engagement, they will often post their nightly specials, special events, and occasional Twitter discounts. Food brands and stores such as Whole Foods will often answer your questions regarding products. Airline companies offer amazing flight specials at times and are often worth a follow.

Our simple Twitter rules?  Don’t spam, be helpful, share, engage.  Don’t go crazy with retweets, but RT messages occasionally that others will find interesting or helpful.   Choose a nice well rounded circle of people to interact with.

Is Twitter essential for the growth of a successful business?  No.  Are you missing out on endless opportunities if you do not partake?   Absolutely.

Cheers and happy tweeting!
